| A theme can be an exciting and intriguing overlay to any party. But remember, a theme-based party requires attention to every detail, from the invitations to the menu. |
 |
The best source of a party theme is your own imagination. But here are a few ideas to stir your creativity:
- Murder Mystery
Party murder scripts can be found at your local library or bookstore. You'll need four to six "actors" to stage the crime and/or be available for interviews. Your guests will interview each suspect and by the end of the party must guess "whodunit."
- Academy Awards
Roll out the red carpet and give roles to each of your guests! Ask each to come as a celebrity. As guests arrive, give them a single use camera with a flash and ask them to photograph, paparazzi-like, the other arriving guests. Play television interviewer yourself. Have a professional photographer available to take a posed shot of you and each guest in their elegant attire. Create an Oscar look-alike statuette and invite people to give acceptance speeches in character at commercial breaks.
- French Flair
Course progression in a French meal is a little different from American meals. Salad typically comes after the entrée followed by a cheese course, with Boursin® naturally, and finally the meal is finished off with dessert. For a new twist try focusing on a French region such as Provence or Bourgogne, or a Paris Bistro.
- Holidays
Most themes are suggested by occasion and are fairly simply. "Holidays" is a theme. Christmas can dictate red and green, silver and gold, or blue and white for Hannukah. The Kwanzaa spirit is heralded in black, green and red.
- Personal Passion
Sometimes a theme comes from a personal accomplishment, collection or interest. The host may simply own or love blue and white china which creates the overall look of the party, or may have an affinity to a culture and everything about the party becomes Italian.
- Menu
The ethnicity of the food can create a theme that dictates dishes, décor, clothing and activities. For example, a Spanish party could have you serving Sangria and tapas, and using Picasso postcards for decorations and place cards.
- Guest of Honor
If you have a Guest of Honor, he or she may be willing to suggest a unique and fun theme based on a recent adventure (like a trip to a foreign country) or a strong avocation like a love of Jack Benny of jazz music - make the party about their favorites!
