Place Cards Place cards are perhaps too fussy for a small, casual dinner. On the other hand, they completely eliminate confusion over seating and they do lend a certain flair to the evening.
Ultimately, the choice is yours. But bear in mind that with or without place cards, your guests will always look to you for direction as to where they should sit. One way or the other, you'll have to address this important issue.
Assuming that your social life is not terribly complicated, these simple seating guidelines should help:
- Split up married couples.
- Pair introverts with extroverts.
- If you know that two people have a vocation or avocation in common, seat them together. During cocktails, be sure to let them know about their shared interest.
- Try to make sure that people who will be seated together at dinner are at least introduced during cocktails.
Here are some place cards that you can personalize and print out for your party.
Menu Cards
If you're serving three or more courses, menu cards are a nice touch that let your guests "pace themselves" during dinner.
Menu cards can be handwritten and/or printed from a computer in a simple typeface on a decorative piece of paper - no larger than 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" or a regular sheet of paper cut into two pieces.
On a buffet table, place menu tent cards near each dish. Guests may have allergies, vegetarian preferences, etc. and menu cards are a great help to them ... and you. These should be handwritten and as plain and unobtrusive as possible. If it's a themed event, they can certainly reflect that.
Favors
A small favor is a thoughtful way to make your party all the more memorable.
Menu cards can make excellent favors, as can a recipe card for an unusual dish. Use a picture frame as a placecard, then it becomes the party favor (you can even send a photo from the party to each guest at a later date). How about a small box of truffles wrapped in a handsome bow as a small gift. Display them on a table for guests to pick up on their way out. Consider matching the favor to the party theme!
